Hardware wallets are a popular option for storing cryptocurrency. Compared to other types of wallets, hardware wallets are known for their security, making them a great choice for those who have larger quantities of crypto-assets. But you may be unsure of how to use these wallets. Most will come with instructions, but you may also want a general idea of how to use a hardware wallet to confirm they are right for you.
What Is a Hardware Wallet?
Before getting into using a hardware wallet, make sure you understand what they are. These are small devices that look similar to USBs. They store your crypto information, including the public address and private keys, and execute all the transactions via the wallet. Most wallets have a screen that will display a limited amount of information and have one or two buttons, with some variations. You typically have to manually confirm operations and will need to install some sort of software on your computer to use the hardware wallet.
The Process Will Vary Slightly
You should also be aware that the specific process for using a hardware wallet will vary slightly based on the wallet itself or the wallet manufacturer. Because of this, you should be sure to read the instructions that come with your hardware wallet to ensure you use it properly. That being said, most wallets work in a similar manner.
Setting Up the Wallet
The first step to set up most hardware wallets will be plugging it into your computer. You should get some sort of a welcome screen with explanations for the buttons on the screen. You will likely need to input a passcode of about four digits as a security measure. The wallet should then show you a recovery phrase, typically around 24 words. Write this down offline so it is secure. You will need the recovery phrase to regain access in case you somehow lose that access.
With those basics taken care of, the wallet will have you download a web extension or something similar that connects your computer and the internet with the wallet. Download the application and open it up, then create a wallet file for the cryptocurrency you want to set up first. You will see your wallet address at this point.
Sending Funds to and From the Wallet
Once you have the wallet address for your hardware wallet and a specific coin, you can send crypto to that address. Do this via wherever you currently store your crypto, whether it is a wallet or an exchange. Remember that the exchange may charge a fee, and there will also be small blockchain fees. Make sure you enter the address correctly, as crypto transactions cannot be reversed.
Sending funds from your hardware wallet can also be done via the interface on your computer. Remember that to access the interface, the wallet must be plugged in. You will simply select “Send” or something similar and enter the relevant details. Once again, ensure you enter the address correctly so you do not lose funds.
